What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the skin along the edge of the eyelid. It causes the skin to look red and irritated around the eye, as well as dry and flaky skin.

What causes Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is caused by an imbalance of the bacteria that is normally found on the skin around the follicles of the eyelashes. Typically this can be seborrheic dermatitis or a bacterial infection that appears due to excess oil production, creating an environment for the bacteria to overgrow.

Treatments

The most common treatment is performed by using a daily scrub or shampoo on the skin surrounding the eye. This removes excess oils that the bacteria feeds on.

Prognosis

Blepheritis is a treatable problem that can typically be cured with continued attention to eyelid cleanliness.
